My Resume from 2007

Mark Mzyk | January 22, 2009

As I said in my Resume Tip Roundup, it’s been two years since I last updated my resume.  Stating that fact is an embarrassment to me.  I should be more on top of my resume than this.

Here is my resume, from 2007 (as a PDF).

I’ve left everything about it just as I found on it on my hard drive, with the exception being that I did update my address and contact information.  I didn’t want to create confusion about that by disseminating old information.

At the time, I thought this was an awesome resume.  Was I right?  Was I wrong?  How would you have changed it?  The one thing I do know is that it no longer fits me.  It’s time for an update.

Your resume is ok coming from college, but now that you have any work experience I would almost start over. You really need to expand on practical examples of work experience. For example, these items under your senior design are weak in terms of meaning.

    – Programmed file generation tool for Itron
    – Coordinated team efforts
    – Delivered monthly presentations and status reports

As a reviewer of resumes, “Programmed file generation tool for Itron” only matters to me if I’m Itron. What type of file generation was it? Why was it important and why as a company should I care? “Coordinated team efforts” is just filling space. “Delivered monthly presentations and status reports” is life in industry and is the basis of how agile development works.

Statements on a resume should be assertive of things you did and you do use good verbs, but they lack content.

Work experience should convey one of the following:
    – How you made a specific significant or unusual contribution.
    – Experience in technologies which show you are not only interested in new ideas but can leverage them.

Thanks for the tips Tom. I certainly know that my resume needs lots of work, which is part of why it has taken me so long to update it. I’m starting over, examining everything on it, that’s for sure.

I’ll take what you said into consideration, especially when I write updates to my job descriptions.

Thanks again and there will certainly be more forthcoming on my resume as I get it updated.
